Emotional Control and Success
In the early to mid 60’s, researchers from Standford University performed a remarkable experiment looking at emotional control and its implications for personal AND professional success.
Essentially, the researchers looked to identify if there was any correlation with the juniors emotional control or “self-control” and their personal and professional successes later in life.
The Marshmallow Test, as depicted below is a modern recreation of the original video. The experiment is a famous piece of psychological research and has been further corroborated in the last 2 decades.
Following the original experiment in the 60’s researchers tracked the lives of the children who had been ‘tested’ and found that those who resisted the temptation to eat the marshmallow got better grades, were healthier, enjoyed greater professional success, and proved better at staying in relationships—even decades after they took the test. They were, in short, better at life.’ (Bennett 2012)
In our area of strength, fitness, conditioning, strength and health – how might this apply to us?
What a great question – well a correlation is seen with individuals for personal and professional success and health! If, this correlation represents causative outcomes, those with greater emotional control have greater propensities to establish themselves with more successful like jobs, resist the temptation to indulge in large quantities of food or unhealthy food choices.
So… watch the video – tell us, what do you think you would have done if you were 5 years old?
And, if you have a child in the ages of 3 – 8 years of age, why don’t you try this in a room with no distractions. You should video the footage and see what he/she does.
Show us, we would love to see what your kids do!
